What happens

A graded exercise test on a treadmill or bike while expired gas is measured breath by breath, until oxygen uptake plateaus. The result is millilitres of oxygen per kilogram per minute.

How to read the result

Cardiorespiratory fitness is the single strongest modifiable predictor of all-cause mortality in large cohorts. Your value is interpreted against age and sex percentiles; moving up one percentile band is the goal.

Where it stops

A true maximal test requires effort to volitional exhaustion and medical supervision. Estimates from wearables or submaximal step tests are not the same measurement and should not be labelled VO2max.
