What happens
A blood draw screened for circulating tumour DNA and protein markers, intended to flag a cancer signal and predict its tissue of origin before symptoms appear.
How to read the result
Specificity in the published validation studies is high, so a positive result deserves serious follow-up. Sensitivity is much lower for early-stage disease, which is the stage the test is marketed for.
Where it stops
These tests are laboratory-developed and are not a substitute for guideline screening — mammography, colonoscopy, low-dose CT. No randomised trial has yet shown a mortality benefit, and a negative result is not an all-clear.
