A low-dose CT scan that measures calcified plaque in the heart's arteries. Evidence grade: A. 15 practices in the registry list it.
A coronary artery calcium scan is a low-dose, non-contrast CT of the heart. It measures calcified plaque in the coronary arteries and reports it as a score. The result helps refine an estimate of cardiovascular risk, and it is most useful when a decision about preventive treatment, such as a statin, is uncertain.
The scan does not show soft, non-calcified plaque, and a score of zero is not a guarantee. It is one input, read alongside cholesterol, blood pressure, family history and other risk factors.
