Peptides researched for aging pathways & mitochondrial function

The peptides marketed for 'aging itself' — epitalon, MOTS-c, and mitochondrial-derived peptides — have no controlled human outcome data. In July 2026, FDA proposed not to list either epitalon or MOTS-c for compounding, citing insufficient evidence.

02 — What is being studied

The research field, in plain terms.

This is the most mechanistic corner of peptide research. Mitochondrial-derived peptides encoded in mitochondrial DNA, such as MOTS-c, are studied for AMPK signalling, insulin sensitivity and exercise capacity in rodents and cell models. Epitalon is studied for pineal and telomerase-related mechanisms, largely in Russian-language work from the 1990s and 2000s.

The endpoints that would matter for an aging claim — survival, incidence of age-related disease, validated aging biomarkers measured against placebo in people — have not been studied for either compound. What exists is pathway data in animals and open-label human observation. Both were reviewed by FDA's compounding advisory committee in July 2026 and both were proposed for exclusion from the 503A Bulks List, which is the clearest available summary of the evidence base as of September 2026.
